Canada’s coastline is the second longest in the world, bordered by three oceans - we should be developing strategies to take a leadership position in the marine technology sector. We have some great examples of technologies developed here in Canada that have had a positive global impact in shaping and transforming the marine sector. However, there is still much to be done to punch above our weight.
This discussion will explore what we can do to help encourage more development in advanced marine technologies and where there are gaps in the current levers that have been put in place to help encourage marine industry development. What can we learn from other jurisdictions that have outperformed the rest of the world? Are we continuing to look in the rearview mirror to plot our course for the future?
As we try to decide what new levers to position, it is important to try to predict the trends for future technologies that are a good fit for our country. What can we develop and prove in the Canadian marine industry and then take to the rest of the global marine market? We need to look at the future of the marine industry through the lens of global technology trends - electrification, energy transition, new fuels, AI, autonomous vehicles, ocean research, etc.
