Maritime Batteries 101 is an introduction course to maritime batteries. The course contains 4 main parts:
-
Lithium-ion battery basics: Currently all battery powered ships use lithium-ion batteries, but there are many different types of lithium-ion batteries with different performances. The first part of this course explains the basics about lithium-ion batteries and what the different types are. Important characteristics of lithium-ion batteries such as aging are explained as well.
-
Maritime battery systems: What makes a battery system a maritime battery system? There are many different options in battery systems design. First of all it is discussed what makes a battery cell into a battery system. The different components and parts are explained, and an analysis of the performance of different maritime type approved battery systems is provided.
-
Battery safety: Thermal runaway is considered as the main challenge in battery safety. How are we dealing with this on board of battery powered ships? How do we make sure that the batteries on board ships are safe? This part also includes a guideline for firefighting on board battery powered ships.
-
Sizing and selecting the right battery for your ship: As discussed in the previous parts, there are many different types of maritime battery systems, which can be used for different applications on different types of ships. This final part discussed why and how you should size and select the right battery for your ship.
