Ed Moakler P.Eng, is a Senior Engineer with the ABS Harsh Environment Technology Center (HETC), located in St. John’s, NL Canada. Ed was awarded a bachelors and masters of engineering from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. His masters thesis focused on the overload capacity and design of deep structural members in Polar Class ships using Non Linear Finite Element Analysis (NLFEA). After completing his studies Ed moved to Ottawa, Canada to work with an engineering firm who specialized in the design and maintenance of naval vessels, submarines, and ice class vessel design.
Ed moved back to St. John’s, NL in 2019 to join the ABS HETC team. Ed specializes in ice mechanics, ice load monitoring system design and operation, vessel capability in ice assessments, advanced structural analysis, and the application of the IMO Polar Code. Ed is responsible for the upkeep of the ABS Ice Class Rules (structural portions) and Ice Class specific tools, both in house and external. Ed facilitates and leads several areas of harsh environment research through an agreement between HETC and Memorial University of Newfoundland. This research is conducted in both the field and laboratory, including full scale ice impacts with ship structures.
