Born and raised here in St. John's, Shane's interest in ships started when he would visit his family's roots in Petty Harbour. After completing a bachelor's degree in Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2016, he began work as a naval architect at the Canadian Coast Guard. He has worked on many CCG projects spanning all phases of design and construction, from concept development using initial operator requirements to participating in inclining tests to conducting sea trials prior to vessel acceptance. He is a well-rounded naval architect having worked on structural arrangements, fire safety plans, paint schedules, and tank arrangements, with specializations in stability, general arrangements, and weight management.
