Moderator: James Bond
The Arctic is heating up, literally because of climate change and figuratively due to geopolitics. Canada is one of five nations with coastal waters in the Arctic Ocean and as such has significant responsibilities to safeguard the not only its own waters but the broader Arctic waters, lands and peoples. The Canadian Arctic is remote and vast. These aspects of the Arctic along with highly variable sea ice and temperature conditions present challenges for operators. In this panel through the eyes and insights of a global Classification Society and two of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy shipyards Canada’s arctic strategy will be discussed. Insights into the changing ice conditions and the resulting changes in domestic and international shipping traffic patterns will be highlighted. Potential foreign science and naval exercises in Canada’s Arctic will be discussed. Your moderator James Bond (ABS Canada) welcomes Paul Barrett (Chantier Davie Canada Inc) and Chris Henderson (Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards) to the panel with the intent of enabling strong engagement with Mari-Tech attendees.
