Process heating electrification and grid balancing with long-duration thermal energy storage

Thursday, September 25, 2025, 1:35 PM - 2:35 PM

Ontario benefits from a green electricity grid and an hourly electricity price structure for large industrial users where overnight power is lower in cost than natural gas. Electrification of process heating using off-peak electricity with a 12-hour thermal energy storage (TES) system provides an opportunity to the manufacturing industry for energy cost savings and emissions reduction through displacing natural gas or other fossil fuels. This session addresses the benefits of TES systems for industrial GHG emissions reduction in Ontario as well as the demand response benefits to the IESO grid.
