Utility-Scale Batteries as Non-Wire Alternatives in Distribution Grids

Friday, September 26, 2025, 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

This presentation provides an overview of Hydro One Networks Inc. (HONI) projects employing utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) as Non-Wire Alternatives (NWA) to traditional upgrades of the distribution grid. A mobile BESS has been leveraged on an annual rental basis to mitigate the impact of seasonal overloads on a radial rural single-phase distribution feeder. On the other hand, stationary BESS assets have been used to improve the supply reliability for remote communities suffering from long interruptions by forming a microgrid during upstream outages. The BESS can also inject power back into the grid to provide other services such as peak shaving and voltage support. Potential future use cases for these BESS assets include participation in the IESO wholesale markets to generate revenue and reduce the overall cost on rate payers. The presentation explores some technical requirements that the BESS must meet related to power and energy ratings as well as feeder characteristics, prior to participating in IESO markets. Some revenue results for such assets will be presented assuming participation in the IESO Capacity Auction and Energy Market.
