Technical Workshop #5: BESS-Supported Charging for Heavy-Duty Vehicles and Vessels
Tuesday, October 3, 2023, 11:00 AM - 11:50 AM

The transition to zero emission transportation is entering its next major phase of grid disruption. As fleet owners look to convert their fleets to zero emission technologies - such as battery electric - the strain on local grids can be staggering when considering charging of Class 8 trucks and major ferry vessels.  In many cases, distribution and transmission grids serving these depots and ferry terminals will not have the capacity to deliver the required charging power to align with freight schedules.  In addition, the planning and permitting delays to construct new lines may not meet the new vessel in service dates nor meet ESG targets.   Non-wires-solutions (NWS) such as stationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can be used to "buffer" the high charging demand and potentially reduce grid capacity requirements. This session will explore how Stantec helped two ferry operators assess the feasibility and commercial viability of deploying such a system and what things need to be considered during the planning phase.
