Description

As an introduction, this paper will briefly explore the history, initial drivers, and early adopters of low-carbon marine solutions. Hybrid and zero-emission operations for motorized vessels are not a new development.  The paper will then look at some of the innovative solutions currently delivered or being delivered globally. As a deeper dive, the paper will look at a case study of a local Canadian Marine Ro-Ro application, combining dual-fuel engines and energy storage systems. This achieves significant energy savings while reducing operational costs and the overall environmental footprint associated with operations. The business case for this type of solution will be presented to show that greening operations does not have to hurt the bottom line and that there are other technical benefits to the types of solutions that reduce emissions. Of course, reducing harmful emissions is only a step in the transition to zero emissions operations. The current technical achievements are levers for achieving zero-carbon marine operations in the not-too-distant future. There are applications where this can be achieved today but what does this look like for all applications in the next 20 years?  The conclusion of this paper will explore some of the technologies that will enable this in our industry for new builds and retrofits. It will also discuss some of the regulatory targets that are currently being implemented. These create a need to have creative solutions developed and available in the next few years to come anywhere close to reaching the targets that have been set. These potential solutions will also be explored through the lens of current trends and investments across society in the global transition to net zero
