Canadian Ship Design for 60° N and Beyond. A brief history and progress update on the design of Canada’s heaviest Polar Icebreaker, and Canada’s replacement workhorse of their fleet, the Multi Purpose Vessel (MPV). Comparisons will be included to the ongoing USCG Polar Security Cutter design and build program. Seaspan will describe the international partnering agreements that have been put in place to ensure the latest icebreaking design methodologies are considered in the design of the vessel and how that experience is being leveraged to facilitate technology transfer to Vancouver Shipyards, thereby increasing Canada’s overall capability in icebreaking ship design, build and support. The presentation will also include discussion concerning the capability alignment between the Canadian Coast Guard’s current and future fleet, the risks and challenges associated with selection of the Polar Code notation including the design, engineering and procurement processes at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards, and the causal effects on the yard’s capability increase to the meet the demands of the designs.
