Max Duursma, an innovator by heart, studied Naval Architecture and qualified under the title of Master Mariner in 1987. He sailed from the years of 1983 until 1996, on a variety of vessels ranging from General Cargo vessels, Sto-Ro vessels or bulkers up to 200.00 ton. With his expertise he developed several innovative solutions for the transport of heavy lift cargoes, breakbulk transport and a new barge-less subsea pipeline installation. From 2011-2018 he was the CEO of a maritime consultancy company in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, specialized in complex maritime EPC projects, emergency response especially in offshore oil and gas fields. As seasoned EPC project director and innovator Max, started working on maritime autonomous solutions in 2018 at MARIN (Maritime Research Institute the Netherlands). In 2019, armed with his knowledge, expertise and a challenge, the decision was made together with Mampaey Offshore Industries to found AMS, (Auto mooring Solutions). The Dutch Ministry of transport and maritime affairs had a challenge and AMS had a solution. And that was to develop autonomous mooring using only the existing offshore infrastructure in ports and inland waterways. The birth of the Rope Picker Robot (RPR), a state-of-the-art system, combining Robotics, Artificial intelligence, and Marine Engineering. However, there is more parallel to the RPR development AMS is working on the first fender less automated mooring solutions for large vessels in mild offshore conditions.
