Concurrent Technical Session 1C-2: Propulsion System Integration: Expectations and Realities – Insight for Vessel Owners and Shipyards
Shawn Balding
This presentation will challenge common misconceptions about Propulsion System Integrators (PSIs) in the marine industry. While PSIs deliver high-performance equipment, they often fall short on full ship integration—leaving vessel owners and shipyards to fill unexpected gaps. Many assume PSIs will, or even can, take responsibility for seamless harmonization—from hull integration to system interoperability—but the reality is far more fragmented.
Through examples and industry insight from multiple perspectives, this session will expose the disconnect between expectation and execution, helping shipyards, naval architects, and vessel owners critically think about their approach to sourcing a solution. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of where system integration pitfalls commonly arise—and practical strategies to proactively close these gaps, mitigating costly delays and inefficiencies.
