Ship conversion examples from Vard Marine (VARD) across North America illustrate how ship assets can be re-capitalized based on changing operational requirements, some of which can lead to radical changes in ship design. One example, the Mangystau-2 which was a Vard Group built ship operating in the Caspian Sea. In November 2021, the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) announced that it had acquired Mangystau-2 and was later renamed CCGS Judy LaMarsh a Light Ice Breaker (LIB) for Canada. As the Engineering Support Services provider for CCG in the central Canadian region VARD developed the engineering work package to support the ship refit and conversion. VARD continued to support the ship refit throughout the construction phase and will standby to provide continued In-service Support (ISS) as CCGS Judy LaMarsh commences operations in Canada. This, along with other examples, is an interesting story of ship conversations from a ship designer perspective and how conversions play a key role in enhancing fleet operational capability. We will delve into the challenges associated with ship conversions and the engineering approaches employed to ensure that design intent and ship functionality are improved.
