John Cross has a Diploma in Marine Navigation and holds an ON II navigation certificate. He spent his early career working as a navigator on bulk carriers and oil tankers. He then became interested in engineering and received B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and a M.Eng. in Ocean Engineering. He is a registered P. Eng. and spent time in both the consulting and regulatory industry before joining the Marine Institute.

Since joining the Marine Institute he has taught a number of courses both for the deck and the engine-room. However, about 15 years ago John developed an interest in applying technology to teaching mariners. Recently, he has been looking at instructional methods for teaching mariners through distance education. The instructional methods are based on merging technology with well researched educational pedagogy.

The resulting courses developed have received Block Credit Approval and cover the entire academic program for both the 3rd STCW engineer and the 2nd engineer. John is currently looking at working to broaden the appeal of these programs to create a flexible path for engineers wishing to progress.
