Born in Victoria, BC, Simon joined the Canadian Armed Forces directly from high school, studying Mechanical Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada. He then trained in England, Halifax, and in the ships HMCS Regina and HMCS Protecteur out of Victoria, before returning to school to earn master’s degrees in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering and in Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He worked in naval architecture in Ottawa supporting ships and submarines before serving as Engineering Officer in HMCS Preserver, the navy’s last steam-powered ship. This was followed by three years in Bethesda, Maryland, working in concept ship design at US Navy’s Naval Warfare Centre Carderock Division, then a year-long Joint Command and Staff Program in Toronto, where he earned a Master of Defence Studies degree. Posted to Victoria in 2018, he was Operations Manager at Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton, then led the Formation Technical Authority. He left the navy in 2024 to join BC Ferries in his current position, where he supports building and management of the Fleet Renewal team, which itself is tasked to deliver new vessels, related terminal infrastructure and supporting functional requirements. Simon has been a SNAME member since 2008.
