Work-work Imbalance and Burnout: Wicked Problems and Difficult Solutions
Frank Lexa
In recent years, radiologists around the world have seen their clinical workloads grow due to the growth in the number and complexity of imaging studies. This is exacerbated by increases in the number of images per examination and also by pressures to read time sensitive studies. Clinical workloads can crowd out other important radiologist tasks in both academic and private practice settings such as teaching, mentoring, practice governance and many others. This talk will analyze the drivers of work-work imbalance, work-life imbalance and burnout and examine ways that radiologists and their organizations can restructure workflow and protect the many other valuable radiologist contributions to healthcare.
At the end of the presentation, delegates will be able to:
- Analyze the systemic and organizational drivers contributing to increasing clinical workloads in radiology.
- Evaluate how escalating clinical workloads diminish radiologists’ ability to provide additional forms of clinical, professional, and system-level value.
- Assess the impacts of work–life imbalance and burnout on individual radiologists, their families, their organizations, and the profession.
- Evaluate current mitigation strategies for burnout and work–life imbalance and formulate evidence-informed alternatives that address their limitations.
