Moderators: Gavin Sugrue & Gary Brahm

This session provides a comprehensive, imaging-centered approach to the evaluation and management of renal masses, spanning solid and cystic lesions through to interventional treatment considerations. Participants will explore modern diagnostic tools, including updated Bosniak classification, emerging CT and MRI-based scoring systems, and imaging biomarkers that inform tumour aggressiveness and guide multidisciplinary decision-making. The session emphasizes key imaging considerations and practical reporting elements that directly impact urologic decision making and patient management.

At the end of this session, delegates will be able to:

  • Apply contemporary imaging criteria to differentiate and risk-stratify solid and cystic renal masses.
  • Interpret imaging biomarkers associated with renal tumour aggressiveness to support clinical decision-making.
  • Report renal mass imaging findings using structured elements that influence urologic management.
  • Describe imaging considerations for interventional treatment planning and post-treatment follow-up of renal masses.

Target Audience:

  • Radiologist
  • Resident
  • Medical Student

CanMEDS:

  • Medical Expert
  • Communicator
  • Collaborator
  • Scholar

Solid Renal Masses
Satheesh Krishna

This presentation will focus on how to optimize diagnostic accuracy in solid renal masses—starting from protocol and enhancement assessment, moving into emerging tools such as MRI-based ccLS, and CT-based CT-scorev2.0 scoring. How to evaluate tumor aggressiveness will then be discussed, including imaging biomarkers and reporting the key elements that impact urologic decision-making and patient management. This will be a double session presentation (40 minutes) - broken down into two 20-minute talks.

Interventional Radiology Management of Renal Masses: Ablation and Embolization
John Kachura

This talk will provide an overview of contemporary Interventional Radiology treatment options for renal masses including ablation for renal cell carcinoma and embolization for angiomyolipoma, and highlight key imaging considerations for pre-procedural planning and post-treatment follow-up.

COI: Dr. John Kachura serves as Co-Chair of the Interventional Oncology Steering Committee for Cancer Care Ontario/Ontario Health and is a patent holder for a coil electrode apparatus for thermal therapy.
